SHARP 2024 was a conference held on the University of Reading campus. The conference explored how books and texts are produced, distributed, and read in global contexts today and in the past. SHARP especially encouraged submissions from independent scholars, PhD students, and Early Career scholars.

For this project I developed multiple deliverables. The conference spanned five days from the 1st to the 5th of July, 2024. Each attendee was given a tote bag, name tag, and conference programme including information on all five days. Volunteers working the event were supplied with branded t-shirts, and around the campus were pop up banners for the event.

Process

Research

I began by meeting the client, who was part of the organising committee. The initial discussion gave great insight into how they pictured the conference to run with an organised timetable and a number of different talks/events. We were able to work together to decide on what deliverables would work best for the format of the event, meaning we could make informed design decisions based on span of deliverables.

Development

Each deliverable took some considered development, however the conference programme required much more thought. With many different levels of information which were regularly evolving until the day we went to print, the programme called for constant changes and new iterations to fit the expanding demands.

Outcome

Conference Programme

The final programme successfully displayed a number of levels of information for five whole days of the conference. This included times, locations, speakers, events, and the category of events. On top of this, the conference also included a map, information on exhibits, information on collection sessions, and publisher information.
See the full programme below.

Other Deliverables

The pull up banner successfully displays information supplied by the client in a way that draws attention to the conference taking place and can be used as a waypoint. The tote bag allowed the attendees of the conference to be seen and identify each other as well as a vessel for any materials they might take home, including the programme.
